The Vape Blind Spot: What Businesses Need to Know About Workplace Safety

Introduction
I often get asked about the role of vaping in workplace substance misuse.
Most employers see vapes as a harmless tobacco replacement, but here’s the truth: some devices are being used for far more than nicotine.
But, because vaping is discreet, this misuse is often invisible.
The Hidden Risk
Let’s be clear. A vape is just a device. What matters is what’s inside it. While some people are simply vaping nicotine liquids, others are using these devices for:
Cannabis oils
Synthetic cannabinoids
Other dissolved substances
Why is this a problem? Because vapour leaves little or no smell, and vape cartridges look the same whether they contain nicotine or something much stronger.
That means misuse can go unnoticed, even in safety-critical workplaces.
Why Policies Fall Short
In my work with businesses, I often see policies that only mention smoking or nicotine-based vapes.
That may have worked ten years ago, but it doesn’t address today’s reality. If your policy doesn’t mention vaping devices and misuse, you have a gap, and gaps in safety cost businesses dearly.
Better Testing Means Facing Reality
This is where the "Better Testing" approach comes in. It’s not about punishing people; it’s about facing up to modern risks and finding supportive, practical solutions.
That means:
Updating policies so there are no grey areas.
Training managers to understand the risks of vaping misuse.
Providing supportive options for staff who may need help.
Final Thought
Vaping is often seen as harmless. But in the workplace, ignoring its misuse is a blind spot businesses can’t afford.
If your policy hasn’t been updated recently, chances are it doesn’t cover this.
If it doesn’t, now is the time to act.
